When Belonging Costs Us

1 John 3:1

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
1 John 3:1

John reminds us that belonging to God can make us hard for others to understand. By “The world,” he means life without God.

The Father sees the faithful as His children, even if others do not see the life He has given them. Since the world did not recognize Jesus, we shouldn’t be surprised when it struggles to understand those who follow Him.

Sometimes conversations change, and a gap grows between us and others. We wonder if we should have said less, or said it differently. In those moments, we need to remember whose children we are. Others’ approval does not increase the Father’s love for us. Their rejection cannot take away His love.

That does not make difficult conversations easier. We want to be understood, especially when we are speaking about our faith. But Jesus loved perfectly, and people still turned away. We should be careful not to measure our faithfulness by the response we receive.

We must be honest. Sometimes people respond to what we say; other times, they react to how we deliver it. Following Jesus means examining both our words and our intentions. We may need to apologize for our tone while still standing by our beliefs.

The people we talk with bear God’s image, even when the conversation is difficult. We must learn to discuss Christ openly without turning every disagreement into a defense of ourselves.

Our Father has been patient with us. Remembering His patience may help us stay present long enough to see someone else’s hurt and perspectives, even when we wish they could see ours.

Lord, we want people to think well of us. Thank You that we belong to You, even when we feel misunderstood. Help us speak faithfully and listen carefully. Show us where we need to change. We trust You with our reputation and what happens next.

Known by the Father,

eep
