For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.
2 Peter 1:17–18
Peter reminds us again about the mountain.
“We ourselves heard this very voice.”
He does not recount the moment to impress others, but to strengthen them. Peter is reminding believers that the gospel rests upon witnessed reality. He saw Christ’s glory.
He heard the Father’s declaration. He stood there on the holy mountain as heaven testified about the Son.
This was not his imagination. Not an exaggeration. Not a secondhand rumor. Peter was there.
And yet even this extraordinary experience was never meant to stand alone. It pointed beyond itself to the greater certainty of God’s revealed Word.
Experiences can encourage us. God often gives moments that deepen our awareness of His presence and strengthen our faith. But experiences alone cannot sustain us. Feelings fluctuate. Memories fade. Emotions rise and fall.
Truth remains.
Peter understood that even the most powerful spiritual moment must ultimately drive us back to the enduring reliability of God’s Word.
Because what steadies our lives must be stronger than what we feel in the moment.
And when our faith is anchored in truth rather than emotion alone, we remain steadfast through changing seasons.
Lord, we confess how often we depend upon feelings instead of remaining grounded in Your truth. Thank You for moments that remind us of Your presence and strengthen our faith. Help us build our lives upon what is lasting and unchanging. We surrender unstable foundations and anchor ourselves in Your Word.
