For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.
2 Peter 1:17–18
Peter recalls the moment heaven spoke.
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
The Father was not creating Jesus’ identity at that moment. He was revealing what had always been true. Jesus was not becoming beloved; He already was. He was not earning the Father’s approval; He eternally possessed it.
And Peter never forgot hearing that voice.
Because everything about Jesus flows from who He is. His authority, His glory, His mission, and His sacrifice are all rooted in His identity as the beloved Son of God.
This is why our understanding of Jesus matters so deeply. If He is merely a teacher, we may admire Him. If He is merely an example, we may attempt to imitate Him. But if He is the beloved Son revealed by the Father, then He is worthy of worship, trust, and surrender.
Those who belong to Him are brought near to the Father. We no longer live striving endlessly to secure identity or approval. In Christ, we are received by grace.
Not because we deserve it.
Not because we have earned it.
But because we belong to the beloved Son.
When we are in Christ, something remarkable happens to us as well.
Father, we confess how often we search for identity in achievement, recognition, or the approval of others. Thank You for revealing Jesus as Your beloved Son. Help us rest securely in Him and shape our lives around what is eternally true. We surrender our striving and receive the grace You freely give.
