That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life
1 John 1:1
John begins his letter by reminding us that Christianity is not built on rumors, myths, or religious ideas. It is rooted in a real Person. Jesus was not imagined. He was heard, seen, observed, and touched. John intentionally piles up these sensory words to show that the gospel is grounded in reality. The eternal Son of God stepped into human history and made Himself known.
The phrase “from the beginning” echoes Genesis and the opening of John’s Gospel. Before creation existed, Christ already was. Yet the eternal One became near enough to touch. John had leaned against His chest at supper. He had watched Him weep, teach, bleed, and rise again. The apostle is writing as a witness, not merely a philosopher.
We live in a world filled with opinions about Jesus. Some reduce Him to a teacher. Others treat Him as a symbol. Still others reshape Him into whatever version feels comfortable. But John calls us back to the real Christ, the eternal Son who entered our brokenness to bring life.
The life He brings is not distant or theoretical. Jesus meets us in ordinary moments. He meets us in weary mornings, anxious nights, difficult conversations, and quiet prayers. The same Savior who walked with fishermen walks with us. The same hands that touched lepers now hold weary hearts.
When we lose sight of the reality of Christ, faith becomes thin and fragile. But when we remember that Jesus came, died, and rose again, our confidence deepens. We are not following a concept. We are following the living Christ.
Lord, we confess that we sometimes drift into treating our faith as information rather than a relationship. We acknowledge that we are often distracted by voices competing for our attention. Thank You that Jesus is real, present, and near. Thank You for entering our world so we could know You personally. Help us walk closely with Christ today. Keep our hearts anchored in truth and softened by Your presence. We surrender our doubts, distractions, and fears into Your hands.
