The Word Abides

1 John 2:14

I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
because you are strong,
and the word of God abides in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.
1 John 2:14

John tells us why some believers are stronger than others. It is not because they have extraordinary discipline or unusual personalities. It is not because they have learned every answer. They are strong because the Word of God lives within them.

Jesus used this same language on the night before His crucifixion. “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you…” (John 15:7). The strength Jesus promised was never separated from abiding in His Word.

As we spend time in God’s Word, our minds are renewed, our thinking is corrected, and our sin is exposed. Scripture also comforts our hearts, shapes our desires, and, over time, stops being something we simply read. It becomes something that reads us.

There is no shortcut to spiritual strength. Our strength grows through thousands of ordinary moments listening to God’s voice. Verse by verse and prayer by prayer. Day after day. Sitting at the table, listening to and talking with the Lord. Long before the battle arrives, the Spirit has already been preparing the hearts of those who have remained in the Word.

Strong Christians are rarely made in dramatic moments. They are formed in ordinary faithfulness.

Father, let Your Word dwell richly within us. Make us faithful in the ordinary disciplines of reading, meditating, and obeying Scripture. Shape our minds and hearts until Your truth becomes our first response to every challenge.

Faithful in the Ordinary,
