And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.
1 John 2:25
We spend much of our lives depending on promises. Some are kept. Others are forgotten. Even the best-intentioned promises can be broken by circumstances beyond our control. We learn early that a promise is only as dependable as the person making it.
John reminds us of a promise grounded in something far greater than human intentions. Eternal life. We do not earn eternal life through religious effort, achieve it through spiritual maturity, or receive it as a reward for living well enough. God has promised it to those who belong to His Son. And God keeps His promises.
Throughout his writings, John wants us to understand that eternal life is more than living forever. Everyone will exist eternally (either with God or separated from Him). Still, eternal life worth living begins with knowing God through Jesus Christ (John 17:3). It is a new relationship with the Father that begins when we believe and continues beyond the grave.
We sometimes think of eternal life as something waiting for us in heaven. John reminds us that it begins now. We do not have to wait until we die to experience the life Christ came to give. That is why John urges us to abide in Christ. Our assurance rests in the One who gives life, not in our ability to hold everything together.
Our circumstances may change. Our strength may fail. Our understanding may or may not grow. But the promise of eternal life remains because the One who made it is faithful.
Eternal life is not merely the promise of living forever. It is the privilege of knowing the One who lives forever.
Father, we confess that we sometimes trust our efforts more than Your promises. Thank You for the eternal life You have given us through Jesus Christ. Help us live with the assurance that we belong to You and experience the joy of knowing You today. We surrender our fears about tomorrow and choose to rest in Your faithfulness.
Living in His Promise,

Eternal life is the privilege of knowing the One who lives forever.
