But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly
2 Peter 3:7
Peter closes this section with a reminder that history is moving toward a day, “the day.” Not an endless cycle. Not an open-ended drift. “The day.” A moment when what is hidden will be revealed, when evil will be answered, when God’s justice will stand in full clarity.
Judgment is never something Scripture treats lightly, and neither should we. But for the believer, this does not lead us into dread so much as into sobriety, humility, and hope. Sobriety, because sin matters. Humility, because apart from grace we would stand undone. Hope, because evil does not get the last word forever.
Peter wants his readers to remember that a forgetful church becomes a casual church. A casual church becomes a compromised church. But a remembering church lives differently. We forgive more quickly. We obey more seriously. We love more urgently. We endure more faithfully. Why? Because we remember that history is not endless and our lives are not trivial.
And still, even here, the warning presses us toward Christ. The Judge is also the Savior. The One who will set all things right is the One who has made a way for us to stand in grace. We hear it as people invited to remain near the mercy that has already found us.
Lord, we confess that we can live as though our choices are small and eternity is distant. Thank You for warning us in love and for giving us refuge in Christ. Make us sober without despair, urgent without panic, and faithful without pretense. We entrust ourselves to Your mercy and ask You to keep us near until that day.
