The Chief Shepherd

1 Peter 5:4

And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
1 Peter 5:4

After speaking to those who shepherd others, Peter lifts their eyes to the One who shepherds them.

He calls Jesus the “Chief Shepherd.”

That title quietly reminds every leader that we are not the final authority. Every under-shepherd serves under Christ. Every responsibility we carry answers to Him ultimately.

For those who care for others, whether in church, home, classroom, or ministry, that truth brings both humility and relief. The flock is not ours to own. The outcomes are not ours to control. We serve faithfully, but the Shepherd of our souls remains Jesus.

Peter also speaks of a “crown of glory” that will not fade.

In the ancient world, crowns were often woven from leaves. They looked impressive for a moment, but they withered quickly. Peter seems to have that image in mind. Earthly recognition fades faster than we expect. Titles pass and the applause quiets.

But the reward Christ gives does not wither.

Much of the most faithful work in God’s kingdom goes unnoticed now. Quiet acts of care, hidden prayers, and patient leadership rarely make headlines. Yet none of it escapes the attention of the Chief Shepherd.

One day, He will appear, and what was done quietly for Him will not be forgotten.

Chief Shepherd, thank You for seeing the faithfulness that others may overlook. Help us serve with our eyes fixed on You rather than on temporary recognition. Teach us to care well for those entrusted to us until the day You appear.

Serving Under Him,
