Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

When suffering came, many of the disciples fled. John stayed.
He could not stop the crucifixion. He could not remove Jesus from the cross. He could not change the events unfolding before him. But he could remain faithful.
Sometimes faithfulness means staying where God has called us to stand.
John stood close enough for Jesus to speak to him. In one of His final earthly acts, Jesus entrusted the care of His mother to John. What an extraordinary responsibility. What an incredible expression of trust.
Faithfulness is often revealed not during moments of ease but during seasons of hardship. Anyone can follow Christ when the crowds are cheering. It takes courage to remain near the cross.
The same invitation comes to us. We are called to stand with Christ when obedience is costly, when truth is unpopular, and when faithfulness requires sacrifice.
The cross reminds us that love is not merely something we say.
Love remains.
Love serves.
Love endures.
John learned that lesson firsthand, and it would shape every page of his later writings.
Father, give us courage to remain faithful when following Christ becomes difficult. Help us stay near the cross, remembering the immeasurable love demonstrated there. Make us steadfast, compassionate, and willing to serve wherever You place us.
