Knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires.
2 Peter 3:3
Peter not only describes what scoffers say; he reveals what drives them. Their words are connected to their wants. Their mockery flows from their desires.
Unbelief is not always neutral. It is often tied to what the heart loves, what the will protects, and what the flesh does not want interrupted. Sometimes people do not reject truth because it lacks clarity, but because it threatens autonomy. If God’s promises are true, if His return is real, if His authority stands, then our desires do not get the final word.
If we are honest, this is not only “their” problem. We all know what it is to want what we want and to feel resistance when God’s truth presses against it. The flesh does not disappear quietly. It argues. It negotiates. It looks for room to remain unchallenged.
Repentance needs to be deep and daily. We are not merely adjusting ideas; we are bringing desires into the light. We are letting God retrain the loves that once led us away from Him.
Lord, we confess that our desires often pull against Your will and that we can be slower to surrender than we want to admit. Thank You for being patient with us and for not letting our flesh rule us. Reorder our loves, purify our longings, and make us quick to follow where You lead. We hand over our restless desires to You and ask You to shape them by Your grace.
