Knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires.
2 Peter 3:3
Peter speaks plainly. “Scoffers will come.” Voices that mock what is holy, dismiss what is true, and treat the promises of God as naïve or unnecessary are present at all times.
We should not be surprised, though it is still discouraging. It is wearying living in a world where reverence is often replaced by sarcasm, where holy things are reduced to punchlines, where faithfulness can look foolish to those who do not want to bow. But Peter tells us this in advance, so we will not be shaken by it. Mockery may be loud, but it is not new. Cynicism may sound confident, but it is not wisdom.
Scoffing is not always a result of intellectual reasoning. It can be moral in focus. People do not only reject God because they find Him unbelievable. Sometimes they reject Him because they find Him inconvenient. The heart resists what the soul does not want to obey.
Peter prepares us. He instructs us not to become angry, not to become fearful, but to remain steady. We do not need to panic when the world scoffs. We need to remember that unbelief does not undo truth, and mockery does not weaken God’s promises.
Lord, we confess that we can be too easily unsettled by the voices around us or too eager to be accepted by them. Thank You that Your truth does not tremble when it is mocked. Strengthen us to remain calm, clear, and faithful in a cynical age. We release our fear of human opinion and ask for the courage to walk steadily with You.
