These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved. For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.
2 Peter 2:17–19
To lead others away from life is no small thing. To trade truth for deception and then invite others into that deception is grievous.
We should not rush past language like this, but neither should we handle it carelessly. Judgment is not something to weaponize. It is something to receive with sobriety. God is serious about truth because God is serious about people. What distorts the gospel ultimately distorts souls.
The warning calls us to remain near the light. To treasure the truth. To refuse the pride that imagines we could toy with deception and stay untouched. The darkness Peter names is not merely in the future; it is also what falsehood creates even now: confusion, emptiness, distance from life.
We must hear this not as people eager to condemn others, but as people grateful to be rescued from darkness and determined to walk in the light.
Lord, we confess that we sometimes speak of serious things too casually or respond to warnings without humility. Thank You for rescuing us from darkness and bringing us into the kingdom of Your Son. Keep us near the light, faithful to the truth, and sober in how we speak about holy things. We cling to Your mercy and ask You to keep us from wandering.
