Rejected, Yet Essential

1 Peter 2:6-7

For it stands in Scripture:
“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
    a cornerstone chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,
“The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone,”
1 Peter 2:6-7

The image Peter uses is both unsettling and straightforward. Builders scrutinize stones. They look for strength, alignment, and reliability. Stones that do not meet expectations are set aside, rejected as unsuitable for the structure being built.

Peter says that is precisely what happened to Jesus.

Those who considered themselves the experts, the religious leaders, the authorities, the “builders” of God’s house, examined Him and dismissed Him. He did not fit their plans. He challenged their assumptions. He threatened their control. So they rejected Him.

And yet, Peter says, the very stone they cast aside became the “chief cornerstone.

This is one of the great reversals of Scripture. What the world deems unnecessary, God declares essential. What human wisdom discards, God places at the center. The cornerstone is not ornamental; it determines the entire structure. Everything aligns with it. Everything depends on it.

That truth confronts us personally. We all build careers, reputations, families, and identities. And we all make judgments about what is worth trusting. The danger is subtle: we can admire Jesus while still sidelining Him. We can respect the stone without resting on it.

Peter reminds believers that honor does not come from the approval of the builders, but from trusting the cornerstone. Faith may look foolish to the world. Obedience may feel costly. But what others reject is often exactly what God is using to hold everything together.

If Christ is the cornerstone, then alignment matters. Our priorities, decisions, and hopes must take their shape from Him. Anything else may look sturdy for a while, but it will not last.

The stone was rejected. The stone was chosen. And the stone now stands at the center of God’s redemptive work.

Lord Jesus, forgive us for the ways we are tempted to set You aside rather than build fully upon You. Help us trust what You have chosen, not what the world applauds. Align our lives with You, the true cornerstone, and give us faith to stand firm, even when obedience feels costly.

In Alignment with Jesus,
