The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
2 Peter 3:9
What if the delay we resent is the mercy we depend on? Peter tells us that what looks like slowness is patience. And not patience in the abstract, patience toward us. Personal. Intentional. Directed.
That changes the tone of the whole passage. God is not standing at a distance, withholding action for reasons unknown. He is exercising patience toward people He has made, people He calls, people He is still gathering. The delay is not cold. It is compassionate.
And if we are honest, we have all benefited from that patience. Every one of us needs time. Time to repent. Time to wake up. Time to understand what grace really is. Time to turn from what we kept excusing. Had God moved more quickly by our standards, where would we be?
Peter invites us to see the waiting differently. Not as empty time, but as merciful time. Not wasted time, but redemptive time. The patience of God is not passive. It is full of holy intention.
Lord, we confess that we often chafe against Your patience without realizing how deeply we ourselves have needed it. Thank You for bearing with us, pursuing us, and giving time for repentance and growth. Make us more aware of the mercy hidden inside Your delays. We bow before Your patient love and ask You to shape our hearts to treasure what You are doing in the waiting.
