But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
2 Peter 3:10
Peter describes a future unmaking, not because God delights in destruction, but because this present order, bent by sin, is not the final form of things. What is temporary will give way. What seems permanent now will not remain forever.
That truth cuts against so much of what we instinctively believe. We live as though careers, possessions, accomplishments, reputations, and all the visible architecture of life are solid enough to hold us. But Peter says that even the created order, in its present form, is not ultimate. It will be exposed. It will be tested. It will not endure as it is.
And perhaps that is why the phrase “the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed” lands with such force. Not erased into meaninglessness, but exposed and brought into the light. Seen for what they are. The hidden motives, the quiet faithfulness, the hollow accomplishments, the lasting obedience, all of it laid bare before God.
That is sobering, but it is also clarifying. It helps us ask better questions now. What am I building that will last? What am I clinging to that cannot endure? What kind of life makes sense if the final light will expose everything anyway?
Lord, we confess that we often build our lives around things that cannot last and give our energy to what will not endure. Thank You for telling us the truth about what is temporary and what is eternal. Expose in us what needs to come into the light, and redirect our hearts toward what truly matters. We place our work, our motives, and our lives before You and ask You to make them faithful in Your sight.
