The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
2 Peter 3:9
Peter lets us see something of the heart of God here. Judgment is real. Justice is certain. But God does not delight in destruction. He is not eager for people to perish. His heart is not cruel, reluctant, or vindictive.
That matters because people sometimes imagine God’s justice in ways that detach it from His compassion. But Peter will not let us do that. The God who will judge is also the God who now shows patience, mercy, and restraint. He warns because He cares. He delays because He is compassionate.
And that should shape how we think about others, too. We do not speak of judgment with smugness. We do not look at non-Christians with irritation. If God is patient, then we must learn patience. If God desires repentance, then we must learn to pray, serve, speak, and love in ways that reflect that heart.
The longer we walk with Christ, the less room there should be in us for harsh delight in the downfall of others. His heart toward the wandering is neither indifference nor cruelty, but patient mercy.
Lord, we confess that our hearts are often narrower than Yours, quicker to judge than to grieve, quicker to withdraw than to pray. Thank You for revealing Your compassionate heart toward the lost. Form in us a deeper burden for others and a gentler spirit that reflects Your mercy. We surrender our hard edges and ask You to make us people who love as You love.
