For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment
2 Peter 2:4
Peter begins with a reality we do not often sit with long: God does not overlook sin, even when it is found in places we might assume are beyond the scope of His judgment. Even angels were not exempt.
That is not meant to unsettle us, but to steady us. Peter reminds us that God’s holiness is not selective. His justice is not partial. His righteousness is not negotiable.
And yet, for those in Christ, this truth does not lead to fear; it leads to reverence. A deep awareness that grace is not casual. What we have been given in Christ is not something we could have secured on our own.
We are not spared because we are better; we are spared because Christ has stood in our place.
The reality is that His Holiness does not distance us from God; it draws us closer in humility and gratitude.
Lord, we confess that we sometimes treat sin lightly and grace casually. Thank You for Your unwavering holiness and Your mercy that meets us in Christ. Shape in us a deeper reverence for who You are. We yield our hearts again in humility before You.
