But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

Peter grounds hope where it belongs, not in our optimism, not in cultural progress, not in human effort, but in God’s promise. That is the foundation. The future is secure because God has spoken.
The Promises of God matter because they tie our hope to His character. If the future depended on us, on history, or on the strength of visible trends, hope would always be fragile. But the promise rests in the God who cannot lie, who does not forget, who has never once failed to keep His word.
Christian hope is not vague positivity. Our hope is confidence rooted in revelation. We are not hoping that things will turn out well. We are hoping because God has promised what He will do.
We endure because our hope is not generated out of thin air. Our hope pours forth from the mouth of God.
Lord, we confess that our hope is often shaped more by circumstances than by Your promises. Thank You that what You have spoken is stronger than what we see and steadier than what we feel. Anchor our hearts more deeply in Your word and keep us from building our future on anything less than Your faithfulness. We rest our hope again in what You have promised.
