I am writing to you, little children,
because your sins are forgiven for his name’s sake.
I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome the evil one.
I write to you, children,
because you know the Father.
I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
because you are strong,
and the word of God abides in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.
1 John 2:12–14
John paints a beautiful picture of the church. He starts with the children, then the young men, then the fathers: different stages, but one family.
Jesus demonstrated how this should work in the Upper Room. As the Master, He knelt to wash the disciples’ feet. The strongest became the servant. The Teacher became the example. No one in God’s family outgrows the need for humility. No one outgrows the need for encouragement.
Young believers live in the wonder of grace. Believers who are walking with Christ are engaged in a spiritual battle. Mature believers demonstrate that life’s greatest treasure is found in knowing Christ. Healthy churches need all three types.
Every one of us must grow. No matter where we find ourselves, John invites us to take the next step. Know the Father more deeply. Abide in His Word more faithfully. Love His people more sincerely. Walk with Christ more closely. That is what growing up in God’s family looks like.
Father, thank You for placing us within Your family. Help us learn from those who have walked with You longer, encourage those who are younger in faith, and never stop growing. Form us together into a people who reflect the love, humility, and truth of Jesus Christ.
In God’s Family,
eep
