Equal Ground

2 Peter 1:1

Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
2 Peter 1:1

There is something sacred about thresholds.

I remember sitting in the passenger seat, trying to look calm, praying silently, as my oldest child eased into the driver’s seat for the first time. Keys in hand. Responsibility ahead. Freedom within reach, but only after preparation.

Penny and I had made what felt like a bold decision at the time: before driving, each of our children would memorize a book of the Bible. For our daughter, Grace, it was 2 Peter.

What started as a requirement became a revelation.

As we worked through those verses, slowly and sometimes reluctantly, I found myself drawn in, not just to the content, but to the heart of the man who wrote it. Peter.

The same Peter who walked on water (and sank), who denied Jesus (and wept), who was restored by grace and commissioned to lead, looks at ordinary believers like you and me and says, “What we have been given in Christ stands on the same ground as his.

Not because of us. Because of Jesus.

We live in a world constantly measuring worth: titles, influence, knowledge, and platforms. And if we are honest, that same instinct can sneak into our spiritual lives. Quiet comparisons. Subtle insecurities. A lingering sense that maybe we are missing something, that there is a deeper level reserved for others.

But Peter cuts through that illusion.

We are not lacking.
We are not behind.
We have not been given a lesser version of faith.

The faith we have obtained is not static. It breathes. It grows. It multiplies grace and peace, not through striving, but through knowing Him more. The deeper we lean into the truth of who Jesus is and what He has done, the more our lives begin to reflect it. Slowly. Steadily. Surely.

So, as we step from 1 Peter into 2 Peter, we are not moving on; we are moving deeper.

Deeper into assurance.
Deeper into truth.
Deeper into a faith that reminds us we stand, right now, on equal ground before a holy God, not because we have earned it, but because Christ has secured it.

Lord, we confess how easily we drift into comparison, into striving, into believing we need more than what You have already given. Thank You that we stand before You not as outsiders trying to earn our place, but as sons and daughters invited fully in. Teach us to rest in what is already true. Let Your Word shape us, steady us, and grow us. Help us embrace the truth that Your grace fully equips us.

Fully Equipped by Him,

eep
