For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished.
2 Peter 3:5–6
Peter reminds his readers that creation has already known both order and judgment. The flood is not merely an old story tucked away in Genesis. It is a witness. A reminder that the God who made the world also acts within history, that human rebellion does not continue forever without answer, and that divine patience is not the same thing as divine indifference.
History is not random. God has acted before, and He will act again. The world is not spinning meaninglessly toward nowhere. It is moving under the holy oversight of its Creator.
And even in the flood story, judgment was not the only note. There was also preservation, rescue, covenant, and mercy. Peter is not flattening the story into one dimension. He is reminding us that God’s acts in history always reveal His holiness, and within them we also see His faithfulness to those who belong to Him.
So, when we read of judgment, we do so soberly. But we also do so as people who know that God’s heart is never careless, never impulsive, never unjust. His works are holy. His warnings are kind. His patience is purposeful.
Lord, we confess that we often treat Your warnings lightly or forget that history moves under Your holy rule. Thank You that You are both righteous and merciful in all Your ways. Give us sober hearts, soft consciences, and a deeper trust in Your governance of the world. We bow before Your holiness and rest in Your faithful care.
