They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, while they feast with you. They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children!
2 Peter 2:13–14
Peter highlights that the corruption taking place is not merely outside the community but within it. These are not obvious enemies standing at a distance. They are present, participating, blending in. And that is part of what makes deception so dangerous.
The issue is not imperfection. The church has always been a place full of imperfect people. The issue is hidden corruption that remains cherished, unrepentant, and influential. It is the difference between weakness brought into the light and wickedness protected by disguise.
Discernment matters in the church. Not a harsh suspicion. Not cynical policing. But clear-eyed wisdom. Love without discernment becomes gullible. Discernment without love becomes hard. The church needs both: hearts open wide and eyes open too.
And this begins with us. Before we worry about hidden deceit in others, we invite God to search us. Not because we assume the worst, but because we know how easy it is to present one thing outwardly while nursing something else inwardly.
Lord, we confess that we can be more concerned with appearance than purity, with impression than integrity. Thank You that You do not merely expose sin but heal what is surrendered to You. Search us, cleanse us, and make us whole-hearted before You. We open every hidden place to Your light and trust Your cleansing grace.
