If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

God’s forgiveness is wonderfully complete. John does not simply promise that God forgives our sins. He says He also “cleanses us from all unrighteousness.” Forgiveness removes our guilt. Cleansing removes the stain that sin leaves behind.
Many of us believe God forgives in theory but struggle to believe we are truly clean. We continue to carry shame long after Christ has borne our guilt. We replay past failures, revisit past regrets, and quietly wonder whether God still sees us through the lens of our worst moments.
The cross answers those fears. Jesus did not die merely to improve us. He died to make us new. The blood of Christ reaches farther than our deepest failures. It covers the sins no one else knows about. It reaches the wounds we have carried for years. It cleanses the proud heart, the anxious heart, the bitter heart, and the wandering heart.
This does not erase earthly consequences or eliminate the daily battle against sin. But it does remove the barrier that once separated us from God. We no longer approach Him as condemned criminals. We come as beloved children.
When Satan reminds us of our past, we do not deny our failures. We remind him of our Savior. Our confidence rests not in our consistency but in Christ’s finished work.
Father, we confess that we often carry shame You have already removed through Christ. Thank You that Your forgiveness is complete and Your cleansing reaches every part of our lives. Help us believe the gospel more deeply each day and live in the freedom You have purchased for us. We surrender our guilt, our regrets, and our fears into Your gracious hands.
