Choosing to Bow

April 8, 2026
1 Peter 5:6-8

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
1 Peter 5:6-8

Humility here means voluntary submission. Choosing to bow rather than being forced to bend.

And notice the promise: “at the proper time he may exalt you.”

Exaltation is God’s responsibility. Humility is ours. God’s hand is mighty. It lifts, and it humbles. And Peter tells us to place ourselves under that hand; not fighting for control, not chasing status, but trusting His timing.

To humble ourselves under that hand is not to cower in fear. It is to rest in power greater than our own.

Humility is hard. It feels like stepping down when everything in us wants to stand up. When we go low, God lifts us up.

We strain for recognition. God calls us to surrender. We crave immediate vindication. God works on eternal timelines.

The “proper time” belongs to Him.

Not when we demand it.
Not when we expect it.
But when He determines it.

And when anxiety strikes? Don’t carry it. Cast it. Throw it onto the God who cares for us. He is not bothered by our burdens; He invites them.

But be alert: the “enemy prowls.” Not as a cartoon, but as a real threat. Resist him not with fear, but with faith. Stand firm. We are not alone. Suffering is universal, but so is God’s power to restore.

God, we humble ourselves before You. Lift us in Your time. Help us throw every anxiety into Your hands and stand firm in faith when trials or temptations come. Strengthen us, settle us, and restore us.

Actively Trusting Him,
