For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished.
2 Peter 3:5–6
Peter takes us back to creation, back to the beginning, back to the foundational truth that everything exists because God spoke. The world is not self-originating. It is not accidental, autonomous, or self-sustaining. It is spoken into being and upheld by the power of His word.
That matters for more than theology. It matters for daily life. Because if creation itself came by the word of God, then the world is not closed off from Him. It belongs to Him. It answers to Him. And the One who spoke it into being has not lost His authority over it.
Sometimes we need that reminder. The world can feel solid in a way that makes God seem distant. But Peter reverses that. The world is solid because God’s word holds it. Creation is not evidence of His absence but of His authority.
And if His word is powerful enough to bring worlds into being, then it is powerful enough to sustain us, correct us, awaken us, and keep His promises. We are not living under a weak word or an uncertain promise. We are living under the same sovereign speech that called light from darkness.
Father, we confess that we often feel more impressed by what we can see than by the power of what You have spoken. Thank You that Your word is not fragile, tentative, or fading, but full of life and authority. Teach us to trust Your voice more deeply and to rest in the power of what You have said. We place our lives beneath Your word and ask You to make us responsive to it.
