These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved. For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.
2 Peter 2:17–19
Not everything loud is strong. Not everything confident is wise. Peter describes speech that is impressive in sound but empty in substance, “loud boasts of folly.”
Most of us are drawn to confidence, even when that confidence is not anchored in truth. Bold personalities, polished words, strong claims, they can feel persuasive simply because they are forceful. But forcefulness is not faithfulness. Volume is not depth. Certainty is not always wisdom.
Humility is essential for the Christian life. Truth does not need theatrics to remain true. The gospel does not depend on swagger to hold its power. Christ Himself is enough.
We must ask ourselves if we are more interested in sounding right than being faithful. In winning attention rather than speaking truth? The Spirit’s work in us will often sound steadier, quieter, deeper, and less self-impressive when we are anchored deeply in Christ.
Father, we confess that we can be drawn to what is impressive rather than what is true, and that our own words can sometimes aim at ourselves more than at faithfulness. Thank You for the quiet strength of Your truth. Teach us to value substance over show and humility over self-display. We surrender our need to impress and ask that our lives point steadily to You.
