They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children! Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing, but was rebuked for his own transgression; a speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.
2 Peter 2:14–16
Balaam knew the truth, but he loved something else more. Peter says he “loved gain from wrongdoing.” His greatest problem was not ignorance but affection. Though he spoke God’s words, his heart was drawn toward personal profit and selfish ambition.
That is why Peter warns that these false teachers had “hearts trained in greed.” Just as spiritual disciplines can train us toward godliness, unchecked desires can train us toward worldliness. What we repeatedly love, pursue, and justify eventually shapes who we become.
The danger for us is not merely believing the wrong things but loving the wrong things. We can speak about God while being ruled by success. We can serve Christ while craving approval. We can appear spiritually mature while quietly nurturing desires that compete for our allegiance.
Balaam reminds us that giftedness is not godliness. Influence is not integrity. Religious activity is not obedience. God is not impressed by outward appearances when our hearts are divided.
The question is not simply what we say about God, but what we treasure most. Not merely whether we know His truth, but whether we are yielding our desires to His rule. A heart surrendered to Christ seeks more than God’s blessings; it seeks God Himself.
Lord, we acknowledge that our hearts are often pulled in competing directions. We confess that we can desire Your will while still clinging to our own ambitions and affections. Thank You for exposing what would lead us astray and for patiently calling us back to Yourself. Train our hearts to love what You love, to treasure what You treasure, and to walk faithfully in Your ways. We surrender every rival affection and ask for wholehearted devotion to You.
