Anointed

1 John 2:20–21

But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.
1 John 2:20–21

In Scripture, anointing signified that someone had been set apart for God’s purposes. Kings, priests, and prophets were anointed with oil. John now applies that language to ordinary believers because every Christian has received something greater than oil: the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

The false teachers claimed special spiritual knowledge. John reminds his readers they do not need an elite teacher to unlock a hidden gospel. They have received the Spirit. They know the truth. That does not mean we know everything or no longer need teachers.

John teaches them that God has given every believer what they need to recognize and embrace the truth revealed in Christ. The Spirit who inspired Scripture helps us understand Scripture. The Holy Spirit illuminates, convicts, reminds, guides, and He always directs our attention toward Jesus.

We are not left alone to navigate a confusing world. God has not merely handed us a map and wished us well. He has come to dwell within us.

Father, we admit we often feel inadequate when faced with complicated questions and persuasive voices. Thank You for giving us Your Holy Spirit, who leads us into truth and continually points us toward Christ. Give us wisdom to understand Your Word, courage to obey what we understand, and discernment to recognize what contradicts it. We yield our minds, convictions, and decisions to the Spirit’s faithful leadership.

Christ in Me,
