Source of Life

1 Peter 1:22–25

Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for
“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
and the flower falls,
but the word of the Lord remains forever.”
And this word is the good news that was preached to you.
1 Peter 1:22–25

Peter wants believers to understand why love can endure, why holiness is possible, and why hope does not collapse under pressure. He takes us all the way back to our origin story:

“You have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable.”

Every natural birth carries decay in its DNA. From the moment we are born, we begin moving toward death. Human strength fades. Resolve weakens. Even our best intentions eventually wear thin. That is what Peter means by “perishable seed.”

But the Christian life begins with a different source. New birth does not come from human willpower, moral resolve, or religious effort. It comes from imperishable seed, a life implanted by God Himself.

The source of life matters deeply for weary believers. If our spiritual life began with something fragile, our discipline, our consistency, our resolve, it would eventually fail. But Peter says our life began with something eternal. What God plants, death cannot uproot.

The gospel does not merely inspire change; it generates life. Life may feel weak at times, but it is indestructible. We may feel tired, discouraged, or stretched thin, but the seed within us is alive, active, and enduring.

We are not sustained by how tightly we hold on to God, but by how permanently He has taken hold of us.

Father, thank You that our new life does not depend on our strength but on Your eternal work. When we feel weak, remind us that You planted something imperishable within us. Help us trust what You have begun.

Trusting the Indestructible,
