Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.
1 John 3:2
It is easy to imagine a future version of ourselves who will one day pray without wandering thoughts, overcome temptations with ease, and have unending patience. John challenges the idea of “one day.”
John says, “We are God’s children now.” We are still growing, but our belonging is secured. John affectionately uses “beloved” because we need assurance while facing confusion and spiritual pressure. Our family relationship with God does not wait for our transformation to be complete.
We may still need to repair what we said yesterday and apologize for losing our temper. Even if we struggle with the same issues over time, we are not permitted to stay unchanged. Our failures also do not require us to pretend we are strangers to the Father.
Children grow within a family. Our place at the Father’s table is not the reward for getting everything right. Because we already belong to Him through Christ, we can receive correction without assuming rejection. Repentance is not an attempt to talk God into keeping us. It is the response of children learning to trust their Father.
Because of His love, we approach ordinary mornings differently. We begin each day aware of yesterday’s failures. We may feel we need to be better before we can pray with confidence, but John’s reminder lets us come as children, not as applicants waiting for a decision. Our Father sees what still needs to change, and He has not stopped being our Father while He teaches us to grow.
Father, we admit that we confuse our unfinished growth with uncertain belonging. Thank You that we are now Your children. Help us receive Your correction without running from Your love. We submit our growth, including its uncomfortable places, to Your care.
Growing as His Child,

Our growth is unfinished; our belonging is already real.
