Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.
1 John 2:24–25
Sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do is to continue doing the basics. It is easy to be so eager for something new that we mistake change for growth. Growing in faith often means letting truth take deeper root in our hearts.
John urges his readers to let what they heard “from the beginning” remain in them. He means the gospel they first received, the truth about Jesus that false teachers were trying to replace. His word is “abide”: remain, continue, make our home there. As that message makes its home in us, we remain in the Son and in the Father.
The gospel does not need an upgrade. Jesus does not need improvement. We never graduate from grace.
We began by trusting Christ, and we continue by trusting Him. We return to His Word when competing voices pull us away. We depend on His grace when our strength runs thin. We hold to His promise when our feelings leave us uncertain. He has promised us eternal life.
John gives believers something solid to hold. Our assurance rests in the Son who gives life. As we examine our hearts, we need not measure His faithfulness by the steadiness of our emotions. Our feelings shift, and circumstances change, but His promise holds. We grow as we keep returning to Jesus, allowing the truth we already know to shape our lives.
Father, we confess how easily we chase new voices and let our feelings outweigh Your Word. Thank You for life in Your Son. Help us hold firmly to the gospel and trust Your promise. We surrender our restless hearts to You. Teach us to make our home in Christ.
Abiding in Him,
eep
