The Lie That Changes Everything

1 John 2:22–23

Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.
1 John 2:22–23

False teachers were not merely debating secondary doctrines. They were changing Jesus’ identity. When Jesus changes, the gospel changes. To confess Jesus as the Christ means more than recognizing Him as an inspiring teacher. He is God’s promised Messiah. He is the One through whom salvation comes.

John insists that we cannot separate the Father from the Son. We cannot say, “I love God,” while rejecting Jesus. Proclaiming “Jesus is the only way” is offensive in a culture that prefers spirituality without exclusivity. We often want Jesus to be a path or a teacher. John will not allow us to reduce His divinity.

If Jesus is truly the Son, then He deserves more than admiration. He deserves allegiance.

False teaching often begins by making Jesus slightly smaller. Less divine. Less authoritative. Less necessary. Less demanding. But a diminished Jesus produces a diminished gospel.

The church does not protect truth because we enjoy arguments. We protect truth because people need to know the Word became flesh, Jesus the Christ.

Father, we confess that we sometimes prefer a version of Jesus who agrees with us rather than the Son You have revealed. Thank You for sending Christ fully and faithfully to reveal You and redeem us. Guard our hearts from teaching that diminishes His person, authority, or saving work. Deepen our love for the true Jesus revealed in Scripture. We submit every belief, preference, and assumption to Him as Lord.
