But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.
1 John 2:20–21
False teachers claimed to know something the other believers did not. They claimed their new perspective would lead to greater spirituality.
John does not tell these believers that they need to discover some hidden secret. He reminds them that God has already given them what they need. They have received the truth about Jesus. They have also received the Holy Spirit.
The Christian life is not an endless search for some secret knowledge that only a few special people possess. God has revealed Himself in Christ and given His Spirit to His people. We should all continue studying Scripture and remain teachable. But maturity does not mean constantly chasing something new. Sometimes maturity means becoming increasingly convinced of what we already know.
Jesus is the Christ. Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus died for our sins. Jesus rose from the dead. Jesus gives eternal life. We do not outgrow these truths. We grow deeper into them.
The world will continually offer new ideas about God, truth, identity, and life. John reminds us that novelty is not truth. New does not mean true. We do not need a new Jesus. We need to know Jesus more deeply.
Father, thank You for revealing Yourself to us through Your Son. Give us discernment amid competing voices. Keep us teachable without making us gullible. Root us deeply in the truth we have received.
Knowing the Truth,
eep
