Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour.
1 John 2:18
John calls his readers “children” before warning them that “it is the last hour.” John is not a prophet admonishing unbelievers. He is a spiritual father protecting people he loves.
For John, the “last hour” describes the age inaugurated by Christ’s coming, death, resurrection, and ascension. History is moving toward His return. John does not provide a date. He provides perspective. The presence of “many antichrists” confirms that believers live in an age where truth will be opposed and Christ will be counterfeited.
The word “antichrist” can describe opposition to Christ, but it also carries the idea of replacing Christ. False teaching often succeeds not by announcing, “Reject Jesus,” but by offering a redesigned Jesus who asks less, promises more comfort, and conveniently agrees with us.
To understand “the last hour,” we do not need to focus on the signs. Our charge is to remain faithful to Jesus now and to discern false teaching. Christian expectancy should produce faithfulness, not panic.
We do not know when the story ends, but we do know who stands at the end of the story.
Father, we confess that curiosity about the future often distracts us from obedience. Thank You that history rests securely in Your hands and that Christ will return exactly as You have promised. Give us discernment in an age filled with counterfeit voices and courage to live faithfully today. We surrender our fears about tomorrow and submit ourselves to the work You have given us now.
Faithful to Him,
eep
