And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
1 John 2:17
John places two futures side by side. “The world is passing away.” and “The one who does the will of God abides forever.” Everything the world tells us to chase comes with an expiration date.
Possessions wear out. Bodies age. Popularity shifts. Careers end. Records are broken. Buildings are replaced. Even the names that seem important today eventually fade from memory. John teaches us to focus on the eternal rather than the temporal.
We spend our energy trying to preserve that which cannot last while neglecting what cannot be taken away. Jesus warned His listeners not to spend their lives laboring only for “food that perishes.” Earthly things matter, but they cannot become ultimate. We are people created for eternity.
Throughout this letter, John presents eternal life as God’s gift through Jesus. When we belong to Christ, eternity begins reshaping our priorities. We invest in people, practice generosity, and offer forgiveness. We serve others, tell the truth, and choose faithfulness even when nobody applauds. Obedience reveals where our lives are rooted. Much of what seems mundane today will echo into eternity.
The world is passing. Christ remains. And when our lives are anchored in Him, we remain with Him.
Father, we agree with You that much of what consumes our attention is temporary. Thank You for giving us eternal life through Your Son and for inviting us to invest our days in what will last. Give us wisdom to distinguish the urgent from the eternal. Help us use our time, resources, relationships, and opportunities faithfully. We surrender our plans to Your will and choose again to build our lives around what remains forever.
Focused on Forever,
