Little Children

1 John 2:12

I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his name’s sake.
1 John 2:12

Every relationship with Jesus begins with grace.

John tenderly addresses his readers as “little children,” a favorite expression for the believers entrusted to his care. Before reminding them how they should live, he reminds them of what God has already done: “Your sins are forgiven.”

The word forgiven describes a completed act with continuing results. Their forgiveness was not a possibility they were working toward; it was a settled reality secured through Christ. John then points to its foundation: “for His name’s sake.” In Scripture, a person’s “name” represents his character and identity. Our forgiveness does not rest on who we are or what we have done. It rests entirely on who Jesus is and what He has accomplished for us. He came not to condemn the world, but to save it through Himself (John 3:17).

We embrace forgiveness when we first come to Christ. We rejoice that our guilt has been removed and our future secured. Yet as the years pass, we begin measuring our standing with God by something else. We measure it by our spiritual disciplines, our consistency, our increase in biblical knowledge, or we downgrade our standing by keeping an account of how many times we mess up.

We never graduate beyond the gospel. The oldest saint and the newest believer stand before God the same way, clothed in Christ’s righteousness. Spiritual maturity does not mean needing grace less; it means becoming increasingly amazed by grace.

The longer we walk with Jesus, the more astonishing these simple words should become: “our sins are forgiven.”

Father, we confess how easily we measure Your love by our successes and failures. Thank You that our forgiveness rests securely in Jesus and not in us. Help us live with the freedom and gratitude of people whose debt has been fully paid. Teach us to extend to others the grace we have received from You. Today, we surrender our striving and rest again in Christ’s finished work.

Resting in His Forgiveness
