Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.
1 John 2:9
John does not allow us to separate our relationship with Christ from our relationships with other people. We may understand sound doctrine. We may participate in worship. We may speak confidently about walking in the light. Yet if hatred settles into our hearts, John says darkness remains.
Hatred does not always look dramatic. Sometimes it appears as open hostility, but often it hides as resentment, contempt, or coldness. Hatred may manifest as the silent satisfaction we feel when someone struggles. The determination to replay an offense until it becomes part of that person’s identity in our minds.
We may even convince ourselves that what we feel is justified. After all, we were hurt. The offense was real. The person may never have apologized. John does not minimize the wound. He exposes what bitterness does to the wounded heart. Hatred keeps us tied to the injury we want to escape. It lets another person’s sin keep shaping our thoughts, attitudes, and actions. What happened to us begins determining what happens within us.
Walking in the light does not mean pretending the hurt was insignificant. It means bringing the entire wound before Christ. We tell Him the truth about what happened and the truth about what it has produced in us.
Forgiveness may require time. Trust may need to be rebuilt. Boundaries may be necessary. But hatred cannot be given a permanent home in a heart where Christ lives.
Jesus loved us while we were still His enemies. His grace does not merely forgive our hatred. It begins teaching us a different way to live.
Father, we confess that resentment and bitterness can take root in our hearts more easily than we want to admit. Thank You for loving us when we were far from You and for forgiving the sins we could never repay. Reveal any hatred we have excused or hidden. Give us grace to release the offense into Your hands and wisdom to respond with truth, love, and appropriate boundaries. We surrender both our wounds and the people who caused them to You.
Releasing Wrongs,
eep
