Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.
1 John 2:6
John has a remarkable way of making the Christian life sound wonderfully simple and wonderfully impossible, all at the same time. Walk as Jesus walked.
At first glance, the command feels overwhelming. How could anyone imitate the perfect Son of God? The answer is found in one small word: abide.
We often think of following Jesus as trying harder. John speaks instead of remaining closer. Before he tells us how to walk, he reminds us where to live. We are to abide in Christ, to remain near Him, depend upon Him, and draw our life from Him.
A branch does not strain to produce fruit. It simply remains connected to the vine. The same is true of us.
As we spend time with Christ through His Word, in prayer, in worship, and in fellowship with His people, His character slowly begins to shape our own. We become more patient than we once were. More forgiving. More humble. More compassionate. Not because we are manufacturing those qualities, but because His life is producing them within us.
Walking as Jesus walked does not mean we will never stumble. It means that when we stumble, we rise again and continue following Him.
Every step of obedience is another opportunity to resemble our Savior a little more than yesterday.
The Christian life is not measured by flawless performance but by faithful dependence.
Lord Jesus, thank You not only for saving us but also for showing us how to live. Teach us to abide in You every day. Let our thoughts, words, attitudes, and actions increasingly reflect Your character. When we stumble, remind us to run back to You rather than away from You. Continue making us more like Yourself.
Depending on Him,
eep
“Lord, what would it look like for me to walk as You walked today?”
