Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
1 John 2:4
John contrasts those who know Christ and those who merely claim to know Him. The difference is not found in what they say but in the direction of their lives.
John begins with the words, “Whoever says…” Throughout this letter, he repeatedly exposes empty claims. Someone may speak confidently about faith, quote Scripture with ease, even participate in religious activities, but they resist Jesus’ authority. Words alone never prove a relationship.
John’s focus is not on the believer who struggles against sin. He is concerned with the person who feels no desire to follow Christ. A heart that persistently rejects His commands reveals that it does not truly treasure Him. Profession without submission becomes empty religion.
Jesus warned that many would call Him “Lord” while refusing to do the Father’s will. The issue was never flawless obedience. The issue was genuine allegiance. Our lives will never speak perfectly, but they should speak consistently. As God’s Spirit works within us, our actions must increasingly agree with our confession. What we believe shapes how we live. What we treasure directs what we pursue.
Our lips may introduce us to others, but our lives reveal what truly rules our hearts.
Father, we confess that our words and our actions do not always agree. Thank You for patiently exposing areas where our lives need greater integrity and for inviting us to walk in the truth. Align our hearts, our lips, and our daily choices, so they consistently honor Christ. Guard us from empty religion and deepen our wholehearted devotion to You. We gladly surrender every area of our lives to the lordship of Jesus.
