And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.

When John says we “keep” Christ’s commandments, he chooses a word that means far more than simple rule-keeping. The Greek word carries the idea of guarding, watching over, and carefully preserving something precious.
A bride treasures her wedding ring because it reminds her of the covenant she loves. A soldier carefully guards the flag because of what it represents. Parents protect old family photographs because they value the memories attached to them. Love naturally guards what it treasures.
Jesus’ commands are not cold regulations handed down from a distant King. They are loving words from the Savior who gave His life for us. We obey because we treasure Him. His commands are not burdens chained around our ankles; they are pathways leading us closer to His heart.
This is why obedience is always connected to love in John’s writings. We do not obey to convince God to love us. We obey because we have discovered that He already does. The more we know Christ, the more precious His voice becomes. What once felt restrictive begins to feel protective. What once seemed demanding becomes life-giving.
A growing believer gradually reaches the place where the question changes from “What am I allowed to do?” to “What would please the One I love?”
That is not legalism. That is love.
Father, we confess that we sometimes treat Your commands as obligations instead of gifts. Thank You for revealing Your heart through Your Word and for lovingly directing our steps. Teach us to treasure Your voice above every competing influence. Fill our hearts with greater affection for Christ so that obedience becomes a joyful expression of love. We gladly submit ourselves to Your wisdom, trusting that Your ways always lead to life.
