And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
1 John 2:3–4
John wants us to possess assurance, not merely make assumptions. Many people claim to know God. Yet John teaches that genuine faith produces visible evidence. One of the clearest signs that we know Christ is a growing desire to obey Him.
Obedience does not earn our relationship with God. It reveals it. We do not keep God’s commands so that He will love us. We seek to obey because He has already loved us in Christ. Our obedience is the fruit of salvation, never the root of it.
If we claim to know God while continually rejecting His authority, our profession and our practice contradict one another. Words alone cannot prove the reality of faith.
John is not teaching sinless perfection. The previous verses have already acknowledged that believers still fail and need an Advocate. The issue is not whether we ever stumble. The issue is whether our lives are increasingly surrendered to Christ.
When Scripture confronts us, do we listen? When the Spirit convicts us, do we respond? When obedience becomes costly, do we still seek to follow?
A genuine relationship with Jesus changes the direction of our lives. We may move slowly. We may stumble repeatedly. Yet the heart that knows Christ cannot remain permanently indifferent to His commands.
Assurance grows as we see His grace producing obedience within us. We do not look for perfection. We look for direction.
Father, we confess that our words sometimes claim greater devotion than our lives demonstrate. Thank You that our salvation rests upon Christ rather than our performance. Continue producing in us a willing and obedient heart. Help us respond quickly when Your Word corrects us and faithfully follow when obedience becomes difficult. We surrender our preferences and place ourselves under the loving authority of Jesus.
