My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
1 John 2:1
When we fail, we are not left to defend ourselves. John does not say, “If anyone sins, try harder to make up for it.” He does not tell us to hide, pretend, or punish ourselves until we feel worthy to return to God. He points us to Jesus.
Christ is our “Advocate with the Father.” An advocate speaks on behalf of another. He stands beside the accused and presents the case. Yet Jesus does not defend us by claiming that our sins are insignificant or that we are innocent. He represents us based on His own righteousness.
When the enemy accuses us, Christ does not argue that we have never failed. He points to the cross and declares that our guilt has already been paid in full. Our hope is not that we have a good explanation. Our hope is that we have a righteous Advocate.
Our shame often tells us to withdraw from God. We imagine that He is disappointed in us or unwilling to receive us. But the gospel tells us something entirely different. The moment we become aware of our sin is not the moment Christ abandons us. It is the moment His advocacy becomes especially precious to us.
Jesus stands for us. He intercedes for us. He represents us before the Father. This does not make obedience unnecessary. It makes restoration possible.
We do not remain trapped in failure because our Advocate is greater than our accusation.
Father, we confess that shame often causes us to hide from You instead of running toward You. Thank You that Jesus stands as our righteous Advocate and that His finished work is sufficient for every sin. Help us reject the accusations that keep us trapped in guilt and teach us to return quickly to Your grace. We surrender every attempt to defend or justify ourselves and rest completely in Christ.
