But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
1 John 1:7
One of the surprising results of walking with God is that we begin walking more closely with His people.
John could have written, “We have fellowship with God,” and that would certainly be true. Instead, he emphasizes our fellowship with one another. Why? Because our vertical relationship with God inevitably shapes our horizontal relationships with others. Pride isolates. Grace unites. Darkness hides. Light brings openness.
The closer we draw to Christ, the more humility, patience, forgiveness, and compassion begin to characterize our relationships. We become quicker to listen, slower to judge, more willing to forgive, and more eager to serve. Christians will not agree about everything, but “fellowship” does mean we will increasingly love one another because we are sharing the very life of Christ.
Our culture often promotes independence and self-sufficiency. Yet God never intended us to follow Jesus alone. We need encouragement, accountability, wisdom, correction, and friendship. Christian fellowship is not an optional addition to spiritual growth; it is one of God’s primary means of producing it.
Walking in the light draws us closer to God. It also draws us closer to one another.
Father, we confess that pride and selfishness often hinder our relationships with others. Thank You for placing us within the family of God. Help us reflect the humility, patience, and love of Christ in every relationship You have entrusted to us. We surrender our desire for self-protection and choose to walk openly with You and with one another.
