This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
1 John 1:5
Everything we believe about ourselves begins with what we believe about God.
John does not begin by describing human sinfulness or spiritual disciplines. He begins with God’s character. “God is light.”
Throughout Scripture, light represents holiness, truth, purity, beauty, life, and revelation. Darkness represents sin, deception, death, and separation from God. John leaves no room for compromise. God is not mostly light with occasional shadows. He is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.
John’s description comforts us because we know God is completely trustworthy. He never lies. He never changes. He never acts unjustly. Every promise He has made is rooted in His perfect character.
Yet it also confronts us. If God is perfectly holy, then we cannot shape Him into our own image or redefine His standards to fit our preferences. His holiness exposes our pride, selfishness, hidden motives, and cherished sins. His light reveals what we would often rather keep concealed.
God never shines His light merely to shame us. He shines His light to heal us. Just as a physician must first expose a wound before treating it, our gracious Father reveals our hearts so that He might restore them through Christ.
The closer we walk with Jesus, the more clearly we see both God’s holiness and His mercy. We discover that His light is not something to fear but something to pursue, because it always leads us toward the One who loves us most.
Father, we confess that we often prefer comfortable shadows over Your searching light. Thank You that You are perfectly holy, perfectly true, and perfectly good. Shine Your light into every corner of our hearts, exposing whatever keeps us from deeper fellowship with You. We surrender ourselves to Your transforming work and trust that Your light always leads us toward life.
