That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us

Our faith rests on more than sincere belief. It rests on historical reality.
John carefully chooses his words. He does not simply say that Jesus appeared to him. He says they heard Him teach, saw Him with their own eyes, looked upon Him with careful attention, and even touched Him with their own hands. Every phrase reminds us that Christianity is grounded in history, not mythology.
John had heard Jesus calm the storm with a word. He had seen Him feed thousands, raise the dead, and heal the broken. He had watched Him pray, weep, suffer, and die. After the resurrection, he touched the risen Christ. The gospel was not built on wishful thinking but on eyewitness testimony.
Our confidence does not depend upon changing emotions or favorable circumstances. It rests upon the unchanging reality of who Jesus is and what He has done. We are not asked to take a blind leap into the unknown. We are invited to trust the testimony of those who walked with Christ and gave their lives proclaiming Him.
Every generation faces voices that attempt to redefine Jesus. Some reduce Him to a moral teacher. Others dismiss Him altogether. John lovingly calls us back to the Christ he knew personally, the eternal Son of God who entered history to rescue sinners.
The more firmly we anchor our faith in the real Christ revealed in Scripture, the more confidently we can weather every storm of doubt and every shifting philosophy of our culture.
Father, we confess that we sometimes allow the voices of our culture to shape our thinking more than Your Word. Thank You for giving us trustworthy witnesses who faithfully proclaimed the truth about Jesus. Strengthen our confidence in the historical reality of the gospel, and help us remain firmly anchored in Christ regardless of the changing opinions around us. We surrender our doubts and place our confidence in Your unchanging truth.
