And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.
Matthew 17:1–8
John watched as Jesus’ appearance was transformed before his eyes. His face shone like the sun. His clothes became dazzling white. Moses and Elijah appeared beside Him, and the Father declared from heaven, “This is My beloved Son.”
For a brief moment, the veil was pulled back. John saw not merely the carpenter from Nazareth but the eternal Son of God clothed in divine glory.
No wonder John would later begin his Gospel by declaring that the Word was with God, was God, and became flesh. No wonder he wrote, “We have seen His glory.” John never forgot what he witnessed. Neither should we.
Although we have not stood on that mountain, God has graciously revealed Christ to us through His Word. Every page of Scripture points us toward His majesty, His beauty, and His sufficiency. The more clearly we see Jesus, the more willingly we trust Him, worship Him, and follow Him.
Our greatest need is not simply more information. It is a greater vision of Christ.
Lord, open our eyes to see more of Your glory. Guard us from becoming so familiar with the truths of Scripture that we lose our sense of wonder. Help us behold Christ with fresh awe, and may that vision transform the way we live each day.
