But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
2 Peter 3:13
Peter ends this section with a phrase that is both simple and breathtaking. Righteousness will dwell there. Will not visit occasionally. Will not flicker in and out. But will “dwell.” Be at home. Fill the place with what is true, good, and whole.
We live now in a world where righteousness often feels contested, costly, and partial. We hunger for justice, for purity, for peace, for things to be as they ought to be. And too often that hunger meets disappointment. But Peter reminds us that a world is coming in which righteousness is not resisted. It is a resident. It belongs there fully.
That means every ache we feel over sin, injustice, compromise, and sorrow is not wasted. It is teaching us to long for home. It is teaching us not to settle. It is reminding us that our deepest desires for goodness and wholeness are not naïve; they are prophetic. They point toward the kingdom that is coming.
And as we wait for that dwelling place, we are invited to let righteousness dwell more deeply in us now. Not perfectly, but really. Not fully, but increasingly. We begin to bear in this world the fragrance of the world to come.
Lord, we confess that we are often too comfortable with what is broken and too quick to settle for less than what honors You. Thank You for the promise of a world where righteousness will finally feel at home. Make us people who hunger for that day and who reflect its character even now. We surrender our compromises and ask You to make our lives more and more like the kingdom we are waiting for.
