The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
2 Peter 3:9
Peter speaks directly into the interpretation many were tempted to make. God is not slow. He may seem slow by human standards, but the seeming is not the truth. The delay is not due to weakness, forgetfulness, or lack of concern.
That matters because when God does not move on our timetable, we are tempted to fill the silence with false conclusions. Maybe He has forgotten. Maybe He is not going to act. Maybe the promise has faded. But Peter shuts that door. The Lord is not slow. The issue is not with His faithfulness, but with our understanding.
There is comfort in that. God’s promises do not weaken while they wait. They do not lose force with time. They are not vulnerable to delay. What He has said remains as certain in the waiting as it will be in the fulfillment.
And that speaks not only to the return of Christ, but to every promise we cling to in smaller ways. The promises that feel delayed in our lives are not delayed because God has become less faithful. He is not slow as we count slowness. He is steady as only He can be.
Lord, we confess that we often interpret waiting as weakness and delay as distance. Thank You that Your faithfulness is not diminished by time. Strengthen our trust when the promise seems far off and keep us from reading our fears into Your silence. We place our questions before You and choose to believe that You are never slow in the ways that truly matter.
