But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly
2 Peter 3:7
Peter reaches from creation and flood into the future and says, in effect, the same word that made the world, and once judged it, is still active now. The present world is not drifting loose from God. It is held under His authority, moving toward the day He has appointed.
Different forces are not managing history at different times. The God who spoke “by the same word” in the beginning, the God who acted in the flood, is the same God who governs the end. His Word has not weakened. His purpose has not thinned. His authority has not faded with the centuries.
The future is not uncertain in the ultimate sense. Unknown to us, yes. But not uncontrolled. Not accidental. Not outside the reach of the One who speaks, and it is so.
As believers, we rest in the reality that the same word that governs history is the word that has called us to Christ, the word that steadies us now, the word that will still be true when all else is shaken.
Lord, we confess that the future often feels uncertain to us and that we can become unsettled by what we do not understand. Thank You that all things remain under the authority of Your word. Teach us to rest in Your rule and to trust what You have spoken more than what we fear. We place tomorrow in Your hands and choose to stand on Your unchanging word today.
