They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.”
2 Peter 3:4
Scoffing often seems logical: things look stable, predictable, uninterrupted, so why expect divine intervention? The world keeps moving. Generations come and go. The sun rises. The patterns continue. And if that is all we see, it becomes easy to assume that history is closed in on itself, that what has been is all there ever will be.
But that is one of the deepest temptations of ordinary life. The repetition of the visible can make us forget the reality of the unseen. The regularity of creation can lull us into imagining that God is absent, when in fact the world’s consistency is itself sustained by His word. Routine can become a kind of spiritual anesthesia if we let it.
The ordinary rhythms of life were never meant to convince us that God is uninvolved. They were meant to remind us that He is faithful. The same God who sustains the world in regularity is also free to act within it according to His purposes. Continuity does not cancel sovereignty. Stability does not mean God has gone silent.
So, we learn to live in the ordinary without becoming numb to eternity. We go to work, answer emails, sit in traffic, make dinner, carry burdens, but underneath it all, we remember that history is going somewhere. The world is not self-explanatory. The word of God upholds it and is moving toward His appointed end.
Lord, we confess that the sameness of daily life can make us forget Your nearness and Your purposes. Thank You that You uphold all things and that history remains in Your hands. Keep us from growing numb in the ordinary and teach us to live with quiet expectation. We entrust our days to You and ask You to make us awake to eternity in the middle of routine.
